During the summary trial that he and his wife were submitted to, Nicolae Ceausescu is reviewing his long reign in power: 1965-1989. From a formal point of view, The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu proves that it is possible to only use existing images to yield films focused on recent history, yet with an epic vein similar to that of the historical fiction cinema. This is an eminently syntactic endeavor, where montage plays a twofold part: mise-en-scene, as it builds scenes that do not exist as such in the rushes, and classical editing, connecting scenes together.

Review:

Who knew that three hours of coarsely edited Romanian state propaganda culled from the ruinous Ceaucescu era between 1965 and 1989 could be so transfixing, illuminating and haunting? Andrei Ujica’s extraordinary film eschews context and narration in a wry attempt to fashion a historical chronicle in the same dubiously subjective spirit that the footage was initially conceived. Little more than a barrage of vainglorious speeches, gaudy processions and precisely orchestrated state visits, it’s similar to watching one of Leni Riefenstahl’s documents of Nazi excess in that the specific intentions of the footage take on a radically different meaning when viewed from an unforgiving historical remove.

“After all, a dictator is simply an artist who is able to fully put into practice his egotism. It is a mere question of aesthetic level, whether he turns out to be Baudelaire or Bolintineanu, Louis XVI or Nicolae Ceausescu.” Andrei Ujica. Plot / Synopsis

A triangle: love, obsession, and choice. Pierre, a ladies' man who has little cash and no fixed residence, describes his best friend Benoît as the world's oldest 32-year-old. Review:

Old-fashioned humanism, certainly, but none the less appealing for all that, Dupeyron's Great War drama (from a novel by Marc Dugain) adopts a slightly unusual narrative policy of proceeding, carefully but rewardingly, from darkness to light. In 1914, after a rather rushed, predatory and desultory erotic encounter that means more to him than us, an officer in the Engineers goes to the Front and has virtually his entire face blown away. The rest of the war he spends in hospital, at first so monstrously disfigured - we don't see his face for a long time - and stricken by pain that life doesn't seem worth living. Slowly, however, with help from medical staff and similarly disfigured patients, his face, faith and sense of identity and personal worth are rebuilt. A few early uncertainties over point of view and a needlessly attenuated ending are mercifully not enough to undermine a marvellously assured film, which is beautifully acted throughout, unexpectedly funny in places, and profoundly moving. And perhaps it's a little more offbeat than it first appears: when did you last hear Arvo Pärt used for a sex scene?

This fascinating 1957 film, based on a true story, concerns the hunt for a serial killer by the Nazi regime. When he's caught, Hitler himself orders a scapegoat executed for the most recent murder so the public won't know the extent of the true killer's crimes and lose confidence in the government. Robert Siodmak brings the stylishness of his American noirs to this troubling conflation of individual and governmental mass murders: when the killer reenacts his crimes for his captors, the camera focuses on his fateful movements across the countryside, leaving his captors out of the frame until the end of the scene—neatly conveying his isolating madness.

Plot / Synopsis:

In the near future where "the combine" controls television and news, a bomb threat brings super cop Jansen to the combine's headquarters. Nothing happens, but his boss gives him four days to solve the hoax. Odd things occur: on day one there's a murder at the combine; vague references to the combine's enemy, Krysmopompas, appear; the nephew of the combine's boss confesses to the bomb threat, although he didn't do it. Jansen stays focused, interviewing employees who received special awards (printed on the paper used for the bomb threat). Is he onto something big or was the bomb threat just a prank? And what is this 31st floor rumored hidden in the 30-story combine headquarters?

Review:

The late Rainer Werner Fassbinder appeared in a number of his own films, mostly in small roles, though he was the star of his ''Fox and His Friends,'' and his performance in ''Katzelmacher,'' one of his earliest and most characteristic works, was a key to that film's success.

Now he is the main reason to see Wolf Gremm's ''Kamikaze '89,'' in which he stars as Jansen, a taciturn, tough but humane police lieutenant in a futuristic Germany. The time is 1989, when Germany has become the richest of nations and all economic, social and political problems have been solved. To emphasize his own nonconformist tendencies, Jansen, from start to finish, wears a memorably awful, simulated leopard-skin suit and a bright red shirt.

You don't know your science-fiction very well if you don't immediately suspect that life is not great in this chilly paradise, a place that has prohibited the use of alcohol but is so boring that it drives its citizens to drink.

''Kamikaze '89'' will be of far more interest to people fascinated by Fassbinder's extraordinary career than to casual filmgoers. It suggests a curious but not surprising blend of influences, including Fassbinder's films, Jean-Luc Godard's ''Alphaville,'' Fritz Lang's ''Dr. Mabuse'' and Louis Feuillade's virtually endless silent serial ''Les Vampyres.''

Though puffily overweight, his eyes mere slits in folds of skin, Fassbinder remains an impressive, witty screen presence as he plays out this satiric charade about a plot to bomb the ultramodern headquarters of the conglomerate that controls all media in this perfect Germany. The conglomerate, which sponsors things such as laughing contests on television to control the minds of the people, is run by a cold fellow known as the Blue Panther.

Is this bomb-plot genuine or is it a ruse to deflect attention from some more dastardly business? One needn't worry too much about such details, though there is a subplot about a plan to destroy the country's last few remaining intellectuals.

The focal point of the film is Fassbinder's easy, neo-Wellesian control of every scene in which he appears -a control that has as much to do with wisdom as with weight.

Mr. Gremm's screenplay, written with Robert Katz and based on Per Wahloo's novel ''Murder on the 31st Floor,'' has moments of mild humor (''There's a 50-50 chance that our man is a woman,'' says one detective to another), but the movie is more interesting as something to look at than as something by which to be mystified or edified.

It is weirdly handsome, having been beautifully photographed by Xaver Schwarzenberg, who did Fassbinder's ''Lola'' and ''Veronika Voss,'' and it is punctuated by good supporting performances by Gunther Kaufmann, a Fassbinder veteran who also has put on weight; Franco Nero, who appears briefly as one of the possible conspirators, and the indomitable Brigitte Mira, of Fassbinder's ''Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven'' and ''Chinese Roulette,'' as one of the Blue Panther's supposedly loyal lieutenants.

Other brief appearances are made by Frank Ripploh, the director and star of ''Taxi zum Klo,'' and Juliane Lorenz, Fassbinder's longtime friend and film editor. However, you have to look fast to spot them.

''Kamikaze '89'' is a footnote to film history.

Plot / Synopsis:

Anna, Joyce, Claude and Lucia are all students under the tutelage of Constance Dumas, a renowned film instructor. Lucia movies in with the other girls in a small house outside of Paris. Soon after, Lucia is attacked on the street outside her home and saved by a mysterious stranger. Then she discovers that the stranger is involved with all the girls and is hiding a dark secret inside the house.

Review:

Not only a "double inconstance" ("double inconsistency" but infinite of them. "Il y a des choses derrière les choses" ("There are things behind things" in Jacques Rivette's La Bande des Quatre (English title: Gang of Four).

Consciously and wisely artificial, the line between acting and reality is never even drawn. There are no clear meanings, not a theme you can put your finger on, but a simple question such as "Coffee?" has such infinite weight that it can easily bring tears, tears coming from somewhere I didn't even know existed. There is a sense of magic, of something supernatural, even though what we see is very realistic and rational... Is art, or existence itself, a sorcery?

Just as in theatre, in cinema, or in life, it's impossible to know where the truth, or the beauty, lies. But in La Bande des quatre the answer is given by Constance (first in original French, then my English translation):
"La démolition. C'est avec ça que vous avez à faire. Tout le temps. La démolition et le doute... C'est avec ça que vous devez construire, créer, inventer..."

"Demolition. That's what you have to do with. All the time. Demolition and doubt... It's with these that you have to build, create, invent..."

In Rivette's case, what results is a free cinema, liberating the mind, and the eyes, forcing the viewer (the participant) to understand a new way of composing the world, a whole new restructuring...

La Bande des quatre might easily be the most wonderfully acted film, each actress (or actor) constantly creating wonders, certainly helped by Rivette's free mind.

In Jan Nemec’s surreal fable, a picnic is rudely transformed into a lesson in political hierarchy when a handful of mysterious authority figures show up. Review:

An acute piece of historical foresight, with a marvellous basic idea. A group of picnickers wandering in a summery wood change into evening-dress, emerge into the grounds of a stately mansion, and are rescued from a band of roving thugs by their host, who ushers them to a magnificent banquet laid out under the stars. Then a man is reported to have left the party; the urbanity vanishes; tracker dogs can be heard howling in the distance. The allegory is obvious, of course, with the avuncular dictator mouthing platitudes, his brutish minions straining at the leash, and the guests submitting like patient sheep to the pointless show of the party.

Plot / Synopsis:

Four men from a nomadic Tibetan tribe undertake their annual, ritualistic pilgrimage to a sacred salt lake. Salt gathered in this traditional fashion will be sold to provide the economic livelihood of the tribe for the coming year. The journey, necessary for the group's survival, also incorporates a number of rituals necessary for their culture to survive in the modern world.

Review:

Ulrike Koch’s Die Salzmänner von Tibet documents elemental, nomadic existence. Four tribal men—Old Mother, Old Father, Lord of the Animals, the Novice—journey to a lake in northern Tibet in order to extract salt to sell for grain. The day before, there is a communal discussion; the price of salt currently being very low, how many yaks can they spare, if necessary, to sell for barley? (Seemingly offhanded; actually, life-and-death.) The trek itself is punctuated by religious rituals, singing, cooking, meals, conversations, and recollections spoken into the camera. A bus passes the quartet on a nearby road, disrupting our sense of theirs being a world unto itself. Indeed, a tribal woman earlier prayed for world peace.
Because it is packed with purposeful activity (including startling shots of people’s hands at work), the tribe’s existence, as represented by the salt-traders, seems sturdier than that of Werner Herzog’s Herdsmen of the Sun (1988). It isn’t. Koch and Pio Corradi, her brilliant color cinematographer, thus conjure images of ephemera. The camera rises to capture voluminous smoke rising from a cooking pot; shadows shimmer across the ground, their substance—yaks—lagging behind. We see the immense shadow from an overhead airplane, whose substance we only hear, its engine’s sound shattering silence. These saltmen shared their experience with the filmmaker, in fact, precisely because they fear that theirs is a vanishing life.
Koch details the arduous labor of raking the salt and collecting it into mounds for the gathering, sacking, and transport by yak. The conclusive shot of the return home, the longest take in a film full of long takes, evokes not only the slow, steady rhythm of tribal existence but also, powerfully, the hope of survival contained in the saltmen’s patience, tenacity, perseverance.

Mehmet, a young Turkish man newly migrated from the village Tire, takes a job searching for water leaks below the surface of the streets of Istanbul. Due to a strange set of events, he is mistaken for a Kurd, imprisoned, and brutally beaten. Upon his release a week later, he becomes an outcast marked as a Kurd, losing his apartment, his job, and eventually his girl friend, Arzu. When a Kurdish friend, Berzan is killed in a street protest triggered by a hunger strike, Mehmet takes a trek to return the body to Berzan's home village near the Iraqi border, and learns why so many Kurds are refugees.

Review:

Ex-architect Yesim Ustaoglu was inspired to make this film after reading newspaper articles about Kurdish villages laid waste in southeastern Turkey. Given the level of censorship she faced, this lyrical, deceptively simple tale about love, loss, and identity (brilliantly shot by Kieslowski's old cameraman Jacek Petrycki) is all the more courageous. The story starts with two outsiders, Mehmet and Berzan, meeting in Istanbul, where both are eking out an existence in the face of police oppression. When Berzan is killed, Mehmet embarks on an epic journey across country to return his body to his home village. Ustaoglu is never didactic. Instead, she shows the bafflement and yearning of the young friends as they struggle to make sense of their predicament.

Plot / Synopsis:

Homesickness and xenophobia in Buenos Aires. Neo-realistic and melancholy drama about an illegal Bolivian immigrant who finds a job as a chef in a grill restaurant.

During the opening credits of Bolivia, we see TV fragments of a soccer match between Argentina and Bolivia. This makes it clear just how the two countries get on: under the jeering and chauvinist commentary of an Argentine presenter the Bolivian side is hacked to pieces. The Bolivian Freddie left his wife and children to seek work in Argentina. He finds a job as a cook in a grill restaurant in Buenos Aires. The clientele, largely coarse beer-drinking drivers, view the new cook with suspicion and disgust: why did the owner take on a foreigner when there are so many unemployed Argentineans? Freddie works away in silence and tries to ignore the provocative insults of the drivers. He does make friends with the waitress (who is however also the sweetheart of one of the regulars) and holds his boss in high regard. But if you bind yourself to anything, you get yourself into deep water…The story of Bolivia is largely set in the restaurant, where the camera stays close to the characters. Dialogues are only used sparingly. The black and white images of everyday life in the restaurant and the significant looks of guests and staff are enough to sketch a sultry mood, while the melancholy Bolivian music fits in perfectly with this story about xenophobia and nostalgia.

Review:

Café society, Argentine-style: a simmering mix of drugs, debts and racism. Freddy (Flores) is a Bolivian immigrant without a work permit. Displaced when the Yankees burned down the fields where he worked, he's taken on by a wary coffee-shop proprietor whose other cheap labour is half-Paraguayan Rosa (Sánchez), and whose customers generally confuse Freddy for Peruvian, when they're not hassling Rosa or bemoaning their own crises. Life here is cheap. Shot in grainy b/w, spanning 60 hours or so and only thrice venturing outside the café bounds, this gritty little number sketches with matter of fact realism the vagaries and desolation of the urban uprooted and marginalised, with flashes of human connection jostling with random intimidation. Wonderfully (under)played by the cast.
